Personal And Social Responsibility

  1. Safety of Others - to show care for and interest in the safety and well being of other students.
  2. Self Esteem - ability to recognize the range of personal abilities.
  3. Attention Control - the ability to focus attention on an individual or task when asked to do so.
  4. Emotional Control - the ability to keep your emotions in check and maintain a relatively stable approach to activities.
  5. Fair Play - the ability to participate in an activity and abide by the rules without having to be told to do so.
  6. Leadership - demonstration of the qualities necessary to have an impact on the emotions and activities of an individual or group.
  7. Etiquette - to demonstrate an understanding of the rules and proper conduct for any activity.
  8. Appropriate Competitive Behavior - the ability to be involved in an activity, give 100% effort and not forget about the felling and rights of other s in your class.
  9. Respect - the ability to show proper regard for and consideration of all staff, students and equipment ithe school.
  10. Acceptance of others - the ability to accept individual differences between people, at all times.
  11. Volunteering - giving time and energy of your own free will.
  12. Enjoyment - the ability to feel good about an activity because of one's knowledge, skilll developement and particiaption.
  13. Encouragement and Support - the ability to physically and/or verbally give positive reinformecnet to classmates.
  14. Cooperation - the ability to work with otheres towards a positive learning environment.
  15. Skill Development - the degree to which an individual has improved in a particcualr motor skill.
  16. Appropriate Strip - the student will come to class with the appropriate PE Strip in order to participate in the class activity.
  17. Attitude, Particpation, Effort - willingly participates with maximum efffort and enjoys involvement in a variety of activities.
Physical Education Course Outline

The aim of our Physical Education Program at Don Ross Secondary School is to enable all students to enhance their quality of life through active living. Through participation in physical education, students will develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to incorporate physical activity into regular routines and leisure pursuits to live an active healthy lifestyle. Specific objectives are:

1. Be a good sport and treat peers, teachers and equipment with respect.

2.Develop a positive self image.

3. Participate to the best of your abilities.

4. Realize the important benefits of lifelong fitness.

5. Develop and maintain a reasonable level of strength, flexibility and cardiovascular endurance.

6. Participate with a positive attitude towards learning.

7. Understand and implement personal development with emphasis on important health issues.

8. Develop and maintain skills from all movement categories.

Movement Categories:

Environmental: hiking, orienteering

Dance: circle, square, line, jive, ballroom, hip-hop

Games: softball, soccer, basketball, football, volleyball, badminton, rugby, floor hockey, team handball

Gymnastics: rhythmic, floor exercise, pyramids

Individual and Dual: track and field, self defence, wrestling, weight training, jogging, aerobics

Evaluation

50%-Personal and Social Responsibility /Participation: (proper gym clothing, punctuality, attendance, behavior, effort, cooperation, sportsmanship, safety, leadership) Daily marks are recorded, mostly self-evaluation, with some teacher input. Please see the Daily Performance Scale for specific criteria.

30%-Fitness: Fitness testing, (strength, flexibility ,power and cardiovascular, plus endurance runs such as beep, 2, 4, and 6 laps of the track). See Girls' Fitness Scale

10%-Theory Tests: rules and health issues (muscles, bones)

10%-Skill: performance in the activity

Please note: Sturdy running shoes, (not flat boarding shoes), clean socks, shorts and T-shirts are the basic indoor wear. Outdoor classes may require warmer clothing including hat, gloves, and rain gear. A towel is necessary for drying off from outside activities or having a shower. A dated signed note from home is mandatory for any illness or medical excuses. Daily participation marks lost though absenteeism, sickness or injury may be made up by doing an activity sanctioned by the teacher, using a make-up form. Long term medical absences will be treated individually. Locker facilities are available in the changing rooms. Students will have to share. All valuables should be locked up. All missed timed runs must be completed before the end of term.
