Career Awareness

So you’ve hopefully discovered, or at least clarified in your mind, a few things about yourself that might impact the kind of work you want to pursue. Maybe you realized your skills are in working with people, and you’ve decided you want to be a….TEACHER!! No?
Ok, maybe you learned you’re best suited to a career working outdoors, in a physical job like construction or adventure tourism.

Whatever you found out, the next step is to identify a few jobs that interest you and do some research on them. You might really like the sound of a certain job and your inventory suggests you would be good at say, working outdoors.

But one of your values about work might be that you want to make a lot of money? Hmmm. There’s a conflict here.

How can you work outside and make good money. Maybe you can’t. This is stuff you need to consider when planning your future.

THE TASK:

In this assignment you need to use the internet and the huge volume of career information there to explore one job that interests you. Open the MS Powerpoint template, create a slide presentation which you will present to the class.

You need to produce a fairly comprehensive review of the job that includes:

  • A description of the type of work done
  • The rate of pay
  • The hours in a typical work week
  • The training necessary to do the work
  • The outlook for opportunities in this job
  • Job satisfaction of people working at the job
  • Whether or not the job is seasonal
  • A description of how the job fits your profile
  • summary about your impressions of this job
  • how the job fits you and your goals.

There are some really good sites out there to find this information. Start at…
  • http://www.educationplanner.bc.ca/ - this is a great place to look up education instutions for BC. It details programs offered, admission requirements, etc. You can sort your searches by many categories. A great site for prospective students.
  • http://www.workfutures.bc.ca/ - You can start here to explore job descriptions. There is a fairly comprehensive list of jobs. Click on one and get an in depth look at the work.
  • http://www.jobfutures.ca/noc/browse-occupations-interest.shtml this site allows you to explore jobs in three different areas: working with things, working with people, and working with information. You’ll have to do a fair bit of reading in these sites to get the drift of the job profile. Your review should highlight the topics listed above.
