The problem with getting out of grade twelve is that you’ll probably have to go back into some sort of a school again, fairly soon after you graduate. If you want to make a decent living these days, you need training, and that will take you anywhere from 10 months, to 8 years. |

And training isn’t cheap either. To train as a hair stylist in a good school can cost up to $9000 for a ten-month program. Tuition fees for schools are rising every year since the government lifted the ‘freeze’ on tuition fees. A typical year at university, when you’ve payed for tuition, books, rent, food and transportation will cost you anywhere from $ 8-12,000. Smaller colleges are cheaper and many students start out at a college like Capilano College and then transfer to a University if they need to complete a degree. |

| In B.C., the work place has changed. It used to be that after graduation you could apply to the mill or go work in the forests and make a very good living. Those jobs still exist but they are few and far between. Many students who do not get post-secondary training work at seasonal and often poor paying jobs to support a lifestyle choice (maybe being a liftee at Blackcomb so you can snowboard) . The problem with these jobs is that there may be little room for advancement, or opportunity to make the money it takes to raise a family or buy a place to live - if that's something you want to do. | |||||||||||||||||||

So you pretty much, at some time, need to think about training or apprenticeship!
For this assignment, you will get an opportunity to do what every high school graduate eventually does scan the internet to survey schools suited to educational, financial, and personal objectives. It is a difficult process and takes hours. If you have a particular career in mind, it’s easier to get started. You may even have a school already chosen. If you don’t know what kind of training or career you want, pick an ideal job that you could see yourself doing and making a living at. Your search will be determined by the job you’re thinking of. If it’s a technical type of work, you’ll be looking at technical training schools like BCIT or Malaspina College. There are schools for chef training, design and art, performing arts (many in the USA) tourism and recreation, photography, and most other careers. |

| THE TASK:
Document a review of your search using the same process as Self Assessment 03. Create a powerpoint presentation using at least one slide for each of the facts below. It's OK to copy and paste technical information about tuition fees, entrance requirments, program descriptions etc. But make sure that the points are just that, points. No paragraphs or sentences in a presentation. Be sure to conclude with your reactions to what you've learned about the school. How does it fit your plans? Are there any barriers in your way like the cost of tuition or finding a place to live? View the Teacher Education Powerpoint as an Example. The facts are a little different because it was back in 1982. Start with the Education.ppt template. Objective: Become qualified to do what? |

Location of the school?
Duration of the training (6 months, 4 years?) Why you would choose this school? What are your reactions to the school? |
